He who can calm the storms of life, and bring peace to our souls

"I have a testimony that our Savior and Redeemer can calm the storms of life.
Mary Ann Baker was the well-known author of the hymn, “Master the Tempest is Raging.”

The second verse of this hymn describes in vivid detail our Savior calming an actual storm. With this same power, He calms the tempests that are a part of our mortal experience. Mary Ann Baker experienced many trials and extreme adversity due to the loss of her parents and brother to tuberculosis. She wrote how this challenged the very core of her faith, until “the Master’s own voice stilled the tempest in my unsanctified heart, and brought it to the calm of deeper faith and a more perfect trust” (Davidson, Our Latter-day Hymns, pp. 147-48).

Here are the words to verse 2 of Master the Tempest is Raging, followed by the chorus:

"Master, with anguish of spirit
I bow in my grief today.
The depths of my sad heart are troubled.
Oh, waken and save, I pray!
Torrents of sin and of anguish
Sweep o'er my sinking soul,
And I perish! I perish! dear Master.
Oh, hasten and take control!

The winds and the waves shall obey thy will:
Peace, be still.
Whether the wrath of the storm-tossed sea
Or demons or men or whatever it be,
No waters can swallow the ship where lies
The Master of ocean and earth and skies.
They all shall sweetly obey thy will:
Peace, be still; peace, be still.
They all shall sweetly obey thy will:
Peace, peace, be still."

May we ever rely on the Lord to calm our storms in life.  As we seek to help others, and when we have been buffeted by the winds and waves of this life, He will ever be at our side, on our right hand and on our left, the spirit with us, and his angels round about us to bear us up (D&C 84:88)

May we ever remember that.
